Some Facts About Fritz Lang’s Metropolis
The film, presented in 1927, nearly left Universal Film AG bankrupt, costing 5,000,000 marks (about 200,000,000 US dollars), making it one of the most expensive movies of all time.
Preparing, shooting, and editing the film took over a year and a half.
Over 37,000 extras were used in the creation of the film. This included 25,000 men, 11,000 women, 1,100 bald men, 750 children, 100 dark-skinned actors/actresses, and 25 Asian actors/actresses.
Influenced many future productions, such as C-3P0’s design in the Star Wars franchise, the use of a mechanical hand in Doctor Strangelove and the name of the city Superman resides in.
The robot used in the film contains— not a stunt double— but actress Brigitte Helm, who worked through the pain and heat of being in a metal suit under Lang’s direction.
Allegedly, Metropolis was one of Adolf Hitler’s favorite films. Because of this, the Jewish Fritz Lang was deemed an “honorary Aryan,”and allowed to escape Jewish persecution during World War II.
